Home Carpet Cleaning Tips and Advice
Wednesday, May 20, 2015

Over the years, JD Hill Carpet Cleaning has received lots of questions from our clients about how to treat stains at home and other cleaning conundrums. Below is a compilation of some of our most commonly asked questions, and quick tips you can use in-between your scheduled professional steam carpet cleanings with us.

Q: How do I remove permanent marker?

A: Believe it or not, marker can be removed with hair spray. Spray it on the stain and wipe it up with a hot, wet rag.

Q: Can't I just use an over-the-counter cleaning product for stains?

A: We advise steering clear of store bought carpet cleaning products because they often leave too much residue, which actually attracts more dirt. Also many of these chemicals contain small amounts of bleach that are used to remove stains, but if left on the carpet too long, they can permanently remove the carpet's dye as well. The best solution is to use a hot, wet washcloth with a tiny amount of soap and wipe the stain out while it's still wet.

Q: How do I get blood and other protein stains out of my carpet?

A: These types of stains can be removed with hydrogen peroxide (H2o2). Simply poor a liberal amount of hydrogen peroxide on the spot and let it foam up and wipe away the stain as it lifts from the carpet.

Q: What should I do if I'm experiencing bad allergies in my house?

A: Changes in the season can trigger allergic reactions due to the increased amount of particles in the air, and prolonged periods of time spent indoors. Pet dander, pollen, and bacteria can contribute to the irritation. It is extremely important to keep all textiles "healthy", not just looking clean. We strongly recommend having your textiles cleaned often (every 4-6 months) whether they look dirty or not. By keeping your carpets, upholstery, drapes, and rugs cleaner, you will enhance the air quality of your home and reduce allergic reactions.

Q: How do I know when my upholstery needs to be cleaned ?

A: It might be hard to see with the human eye, but unhealthy substances are being invisibly transferred onto your upholstered fabrics. Pets, clothing, purses, and briefcases can transfer germs onto your textiles. Exhaust, asphalt, pollen, dust, airborne grease, and food particles also contribute to an unhealthy fabric over time. Additionally, oil is corrosive in nature and will continue to deteriorate your textiles if left unattended.

The takeaway here is just because a fabric "looks" clean doesn't mean that it's actually clean. That's why we recommend getting your upholstery professionally cleaned at least once a year, and every 4-6 months if you have pets or allergies. The cleaner you keep your fabric, the longer it will last!

Q: What is causing those ugly black lines around the baseboards, stairs and beneath doorways and closets?

A: If you have light colored carpets, you may have experienced dark lines that appear on the carpet. This is called filtration soiling because it comes from air passing through the carpet as it's attempting to get through the crack between the carpet and the baseboard. As the air passes through the edge of the carpet fibers, microscopic soiling is deposited there. This occurs over a significant period of time and is not noticed until a buildup has occurred.

This type of soiling is difficult to remove because the soil particles are so fine that they penetrate deep into the carpet fibers, sometimes into the backing of the carpet. Can it be removed? Sometimes! With special products, time and effort, reasonable results can be achieved.

To help prevent filtration soiling, we recommend vacuuming and wiping the edges of your carpet on a regular basis. Be careful not to nick your fingers around the tack-strip on the edge of the carpeting.
